1. Overview

Laravel is an open-source PHP web framework with expressive, elegant syntax. Laravel has its built-in features with a variety of compatible packages and extensions, making it one of the best choices for building modern full-stack web applications. In my previous blog, we got an insight into Understanding The Basic Components Of Laravel Framework – Part 2 

This segment will be the last part in which we cover the remaining topics such as URL generation, accessing the current URL, error handling techniques, and many more.

2. URL Generation

Laravel provides helpers to assist in generating URLs for applications. The helpers are primarily helpful in building links in templates and API responses or developing redirect responses to other application modules.
The URL helper is used to generate arbitrary URLs for the applications. The generated URL will automatically use the ‘HTTP or HTTPS’ and host from the current request is handled by the application:

  • Accessing The Current URL –
    If no path is provided to the URL helper, an Illuminate\Routing\UrlGenerator instance is returned, allowing to access information about the current URL

  • Singed URLs –
    In Laravel, we can easily create “signed” URLs to named routes. These URLs have a “signature” hash appended to the query, allowing Laravel to verify that the URL has not been modified since it was created. Signed URLs are useful for routes that are publicly accessible yet need layered protection against URL manipulation.

  • URLs For Controller Actions –
    The action function generates a URL for the given controller action

    If the controller method accepts route parameters, you may pass an associative array of route parameters as the second argument to the function:

  • Default Values –
    In some cases, we can specify request-wide default values for specific URL parameters, Eg

3. Session

Since HTTP-driven applications are stateless, sessions provide a way to store information about the user across multiple requests. User information is typically placed in a persistent store/backend that can be accessed from subsequent requests. Laravel has a variety of session backends that are accessed through an expressive, unified API.

By default, Laravel is configured to use the ‘file’ session driver, which works well for many applications. If the application is load-balanced across multiple web servers, then, in this case, we should choose a centralized store that all servers can access.

The session ‘driver’ configuration option defines where session data will be stored for each request. Laravel has several great drivers out of the box:

  • File – sessions are stored in
  • Cookie – sessions are stored in secure, encrypted cookies
  • Database – sessions are stored in a relational database
  • Memcached / Redis – sessions are stored in one of these fast, cache based stores
  • Dynamodb – sessions are stored in AWS DynamoDB
  • Array – sessions are stored in a PHP array and will not be persisted

4. Validation

Laravel has several different approaches to validate applications’ incoming data. It includes a wide variety of convenient validation rules that may apply to data, even providing the ability to validate if values are unique in a given database table.

  • Defining the Routes –
    The application’s routes are defined in the

    file. Where the ‘GET’ route will display a form for the user to create a new blog post, while the ‘POST’ route will store the new blog in the database.

  • Writing the Validation Login –
    The ‘store’ method with the login to validate the new blog post. We can use the ‘validate’ method provided by the Illuminate\Http\Request object. Afterward, if the validation rules pass, the code will keep executing normally.

    If the validation fails normally, then an exception will be thrown and the error response will be sent to user.

Alternatively, validation rules may be specified as arrays of rules instead of a single | delimited string:

In addition, you may use the ‘validateWithBag’ method to validate a request and store any error messages within a named error bag:

5. Error Handling

Laravel error and exceptional handling are configured when a new Laravel Project starts.

This is the class is where all exceptions which are thrown by the application are logged and then rendered to the user.

  • The Exception Handler –
    All exceptions are handled by the class:

    This class contains a register method where we can register custom exception reporting and rendering callbacks. For example, if we need to report different types of exceptions in different ways, we may use the reportable method to register a closure that should be executed when an exception of a given type needs to be reported. Laravel will deduce what type of exception the closure reports by examining the type-hint of the closure:

  • When we register a custom exception reporting callback using the reportable method, Laravel will still log the exception using the default logging configuration for the application. If we want to stop the propagation of the exception to the default logging stack, then we may use the stop method when defining the reporting callback or return false from the callback:
